When children connect to the natural world they "naturally" gain a stronger sense of self, they "naturally" become braver, and they "naturally" become more curious. As they naturally begin to attach to place, they also begin to attach to each other, forming an inclusive community.
It has been my experience that this development of natural agency outside translates to classroom learning opportunities as well. Students become much more engaged in the "nuts and bolts" of the "3Rs". As with anything, though, practice makes perfect. Going outside on a regular basis is important. I try to get out for 3 hour blocks twice a week.
