It is really difficult to tell if a student is making sounds correctly behind a mask, and being outside is still the safest option, so I started doing some of my direct instruction outside so we could periodically take off our masks. Here is what I noticed: in 20 minutes I have almost absolute engagement instantly and continuously. The self-reg tools I employ are mats (cause that is what you sit on outside to insulate from cold and wet) and a lap for those that also need some closer co-regulation. These are my direct instruction self-regulation aids inside: body socks, wobble bottoms, chairs, weighted snakes, fidgets.... Suffice it to say that many students need self-reg help and I try and normalize it. If you need a tool, take it (unless it is one that needs the guidance of an OT, then it is reserved for specific students). Use it to help you learn because learning will make the world more accessible and interesting. Most days most of them are used; paying attention and engaging with direct instruction is hard.
But... they don't need it outside...?
